Richard D. Turner
May 11, 1951 – December 2, 2023
Richard D. Turner, of Maysville, passed away at the age of 72 on Saturday December 2, 2023, after a four-year battle with cancer. He left this world peacefully, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Richard was born on May 11, 1951, in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, as the third of four children to Leonard Clarence Turner and Maurine Hattie (Brinkley) Turner, of Maysville, Oklahoma. Richard was raised in Maysville and chose it for his lifelong home.
Richard met the love of his life, Barbara Ruth (Dutton) Turner, of neighboring Lindsay, Oklahoma, in the late 1970s and said she was the prettiest girl he’d ever laid eyes on. The two were married in Gainesville, Texas before making their home in Maysville, where they resided until Barbara’s death in June of 2022. Richard welcomed five children: Christy (Turner) Bartels, Wesley Turner, and Terry Turner from a prior marriage, as well as Rae (Turner) Kittrell and Sarah (Turner) Holmes with Barbara.
Richard had a long and diverse career, retiring from over two decades of oil and gas wireline work in 2016. Prior to his work in oil and gas, Richard spent time in law enforcement, as a deputy in both Garvin County and McClain County, including serving as a K-9 training officer.
Richard enjoyed a love of hunting and was a noted admirer and collector of guns. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and could often be found traversing the highways of Oklahoma and Arkansas on his bike with Barbara. They loved exploring, finding new cafes, and seeing everything that the highways in the heart of the country had to offer. But above all, Richard enjoyed his family and you could always count on “Papa” to be in attendance at every sporting event or activity of any kind for his children and grandchildren, cheering them on and showing support. Although we know he’s happily reunited with Barbara now, his presence here will be greatly missed by his loving family, his friends, and the community of Maysville.
Richard is survived by his children, Christy Bartels and her husband, Ken Bartels, of Lexington, Wesley Turner, of Maysville, Terry Turner, of Rosedale, Rae Kittrell, of Moore, Sarah Holmes and her husband, Rhett Holmes, of Goldsby, his sisters, Linda Sue Murray, of Maysville, and Cynthia Funk, of Maysville, nine grandsons, Ryan, Ryder, Rylan, Harrison, Levi, Luke, Tanner, Jake, and Reed, two granddaughters, Morgann and Alice, and one great-grandson, Otto, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Leonard Eugene Turner, and his wife, Barbara Ruth Turner.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Story Baptist Church outside of Maysville, followed by a burial at the Dibble Cemetery under the direction of John W. Williams of the Winans Funeral Home, Maysville, Oklahoma. Words of comfort may be sent to the family at this website.
