Juanita Louise Powers, 93, entered eternal rest October 30, 2020. She was born January 15, 1927 in Bennington, Oklahoma to Hix and Clara Shoemake. Shortly after birth, she moved to Lindsay, Oklahoma and spent most of her life there. After her mother became ill, at age nine, she took on household responsibilities, cared for her younger brother, JB, and cooked for many farmhands. Juanita blossomed into a breathtakingly beautiful woman, and in April of 1945, an equally handsome Marine, Willie Leon Powers, who recently returned from war, approached her on the street and said, “I’m going to marry you.” Juanita responded, “I don’t think so,” but one week later, they were married and remained united in marriage for 67 years until his passing in 2013. In her husband’s declining years, Juanita remained devout in her care and compassion for the love of her life until he took his last breath.
Juanita and Leon bought land and made their livelihood by cattle ranching, farming, and growing and raising broomcorn. It was here Juanita bore and raised two dutiful children, Linda and Danny. She was the true definition of an American Cowgirl, and she tended the ranch even in her later years. Juanita doted over her family, and her grandchildren took precedence over almost everything in life. But most of all, Juanita was devoted to God and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Church of Christ, and her family takes comfort knowing they will one day be reunited under Christ’s love.
Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, Hix Shoemake and Clara Annie Bell Shoemake, her brother JB Shoemake, and devoted husband, Willie Leon Powers. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Baker and husband Elzie, her son, Danny Powers and wife Sandra, four grandchildren, Garcy Reyes, Brett Powers and wife Amy, Alyssa Louise Foresman and husband Gregg, and Kyle Powers, seven great-grandchildren, Emma Griffin, Reid Griffin, Gabriel Reyes, Bryson Powers, Liam Powers, Eric Stoops, and Levi Burns, and numerous extended family members, church family, and friends.
Social distancing will be in place at the cemetery.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at the Green Hill Cemetery, Lindsay, Oklahoma with Tony Lalli officiating. Burial is under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville, OK.
