Leon Scott passed away quietly on August 30, 2017, in Bryan County, Oklahoma. He was born Clifford Leon Scott on Oct. 9, 1933 in Wewoka, Oklahoma, to Galon And Flora Scott. Leon married his high school sweetheart Ruby A. Gabbard on August 21, 1953. Sixty-four years later she was still at his side when he passed away. As a young man, Leon was an avid outdoorsman. He hunted, fished and went on family camping trips around the mountains and rivers of SE Oklahoma. During these years, he and Ruby loved to boat, water ski and camp on Lake Texoma with their children Mike and Regina. Leon graduated from Maysville High School in 1951, lettering in three sports at MHS. He attended the University of Oklahoma, East Central Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma Baptist University. He attended OBU on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor degree in Education. He later completed his Master degree in Counseling at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. After several years in the Oklahoma oil industry, Leon began his career in education at Madill High School in Madill, OK. At Madill HS he coached baseball, basketball and football, became the HS Counselor and taught Math. In 1970 Leon continued his career in education at Southeastern State College (later SEOSU) in Durant, OK. He started as the Upward Bound Program Counselor, became the UB Program Director and retired in the early 90’s as Director of TRIO Programs at SEOSU. He always spoke of his years with Upward Bound as defining what he loved most about education. Coming from the same background, he was proud to have been a part of helping students from low-income areas, who were most often, the first in their family to continue and complete their education. Leon retired from SEOSU in the early 90’s and went to Paris Junior College in Paris, TX to start TRIO Program services at PJC. Leon is survived by his wife Ruby and their two children, Mike Scott and Regina (Scott) Cowin. His pride and joy were his grandchildren Brady Scott, Edie Scott Cowan and Adam Skeith. Leon will be joined in heaven by his parents Galon and Flora, his brothers Edward Scott, Lloyd Scott, Carl Scott and grandson Adam. Leon is deeply loved and will be missed by his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews. Leon's wife and family would like to express their gratitude for the many prayers and condolences he received. Graveside memorial services will be held for family and friends at the Maysville Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2017 under the direction of John W. Williams of Winans Funeral Home, Maysville, OK. Words of comfort may be sent to their family at www.winansfuneralhome.com
