Mary Rae Martin

February 3, 1943 — June 25, 2016

Mary Rae Martin of Maysville was born on February 3, 1943 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Raymond and Mary Jane (Evans) Bynum. She was 73 years old when she went home to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, June 25, 2016. Mary was a graduate of Lindsay High School. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central State University in Edmond and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Oklahoma. She worked as an English teacher at Purcell High School and Noble High School. Mary was the librarian for Noble High School, Ringling Public Schools, Okmulgee Elementary School, Crowder Public School, Pauls Valley High School, and Paoli Public Schools. Mary married William “Bill” Martin on December 22, 1961 in Gainesville, Texas. They lived in several places before moving from Indianola, Oklahoma to Maysville in 2006. She loved her daughters, Renee and Angie, very much and was proud of both of them and their accomplishments. What can I say about the love of her life, her granddaughter Tyler. She and Bill drove all over the state to soccer games when Tyler was in high school. When Tyler received a scholarship in Cross Country Running to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, they drove all over the central United States to see her run. When Tyler chose to be a teacher, Nana was overjoyed. She enjoyed reading, sewing, traveling, walking, exercising, and training her beloved Zoe, her Wired Fox Terrier she taught to read about six commands on flash cards. She was diagnosed with Type I diabetes in 1962 and was insulin dependent for 54 years. She was a remarkable example of how to live with diabetes, but it finally caught up with her and she knew it. The two hours her family had with her at the end were a miracle. Mary loved the Lord and was saved at an early age at the Calvary Baptist Church in Lindsay and was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Paoli. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School all of her life. Mary will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Her survivors include her husband Bill of the home. Daughters, Renee’ Surowicz and husband Ed of Norman and Angie Martin and Dave Wollitz of Newcastle. A granddaughter, Tyler Surowicz of Mancos, Colorado. And her beloved dog, Zoe. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Bynum, and a brother, Jimmy Dan Bynum who died at the age of seven. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the First Baptist Church, Paoli, OK with Rev.
