Claudie Ray Somers

Claudie “Corkey” Ray Somers passed away at his home in Maysville on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Corkey was born August 1, 1934, the son of Claud and Eliza (McGill) Somers of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He grew up in Pauls Valley graduating from Pauls Valley High School in 1952. Corkey spent most of his life driving over-the-road trucks for Wacker’s and Anthony’s. In May 1983, he married LaVerle (Holmes) Coffey. After retiring Corkey became active in the Purcell Chickasaw Senior Citizen Center working many hours helping to raise funds for the numerous trips they took and enjoyed. He was very active in the Chickasaw Nation attending various meetings held throughout the year providing input concerning the needs of the aging members of the tribe. Corkey is survived by his children: Doyle Somers and wife, Connie of Norman; Belinda and husband, Rickey Wilkerson of Pauls Valley; David Somers and wife, Kay of Wynnewood; Kara and husband, Rick Shorter of Pauls Valley; step-son, Barry Coffey of Fort Gordon; and step-daughter, Michelle Coffey and her fiancé, Danny Powell of Maysville. In addition he is survived by his sister, Betty and husband, Melvin Crabtree of Wynnewood; brother, Roy Somers of Lindsay; brother, Donnel of Wynnewood; sister, Audrey and husband, Don Herell of Ardmore; sister, Lou and husband, George Carlton of Wynnewood; sister, Barbara and husband, David Johnson of Wynnewood. And countless nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Corkey was blessed with 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and special friends, Brenda Jones and her sons, Colton and Shaydon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claud and Eliza Somers; his wife, LaVerl; his sister, Louise Botkin, and brother, Frank. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at Winans Funeral Home Chapel in Maysville with Rev. David Frost of Pernell Church of Christ will officiate.
